While developing The Iron Horse Hotel, owner Tim Dixon became acutely aware of the diminishing number of local shop classes teaching important trade skills to our youth. Recalling his own positive experiences with hands-on learning, Tim took it upon himself to make a difference. He sought to combine his love of motorcycles with his commitment to education, and thus, created BUILD – a mentorship program that pairs high school students with bike-savvy mentors and faculty advisors to rebuild “barn-condition” race bikes in a 100-day season.
From managing the program and securing project donors to coordinating teams and promoting outreach events, Tim and his team built a viable and sustaining 501(c)3 non-profit, which is now celebrating its 4th year and has plans to dramatically expand to a national level in the near future.
